What is Equality & Diversity?

Diversity comes in many forms, from our ethnicity, culture or religious belief systems to our age, gender, sexual orientation and abilities.  These differences are what add value and strength to our communities, they shape who we are and our contributions to society.  Essentially, we are all different and at different times in our life we will all have different needs.   But despite our differences, we should all have the same chances in life.  Equality is about providing the same opportunities for everyone.

Equality Groups

The new Equality Act, which came into force in October 2010, protects groups in our society who face unfair discrimination.

The ‘protected characteristics’ under equality law are:

  • Age
  • Disability
  • Gender
  • Gender Identity
  • Pregnancy & Maternity
  • Race
  • Religion or Belief
  • Sexual Orientation
