The Voice of Parents for Stockport Maternity Services
Who are we?
The Maternity Services Liaison Committee (MSLC) is a group who meet regularly to review maternity services provided by Stockport NHS Foundation Trust. The group consists of local parents (service users), midwives, doctors, antenatal teachers, breastfeeding counsellors and those responsible for commissioning local maternity services. We discuss how local maternity services are currently run, what works well and what changes would help improve the services provided.
What are maternity services?
This includes the care that you receive during pregnancy, birth and the early days of parenthood. It takes place in a variety of settings across Stockport including GP surgeries, children’s centres, birth centres and at home. Staff providing care include midwives, assistant practitioners, obstetricians, anaesthetists, paediatricians and support staff. Maternity services also provide information to pregnant women and their partners, for example about scans and tests or support for stopping smoking.
What do we do?
Our main aim is to improve local maternity services. We do this by listening to parents and parents to be who are part of the Committee. This information, along with information from feedback sheets, complaint logs, parent surveys help shape maternity services in Stockport..
Set up in 2011, we have already started to make changes to improve maternity services in Stockport. Some of these have included:
- Publicising the £10 parking permit available to all women using the maternity services
- Contributing to the new visiting policy
- Working with midwives on the Action Plan developed in response to a recent survey of women’s experiences of care
- Supplying ideas and guidance about the birth pool hire and use by parents
- Providing feedback and ideas for the refurbishment programme of the Delivery Suite and Maternity wards at Stepping Hill Hospital (due to be fully operational in Summer 2013)
- Developing a Ward Information Leaflet for parents who stay in Maternity Ward 2 (‘Mat 2’) at Stepping Hill Hospital (planned launch summer 2013).
