Stockport’s independent local radio station Imagine on 104.9 FM now runs a health news hour every Thursday between noon and 1pm. It often features some of Stockport’s top GPs and other clinicians who are talking on important health issues that affect many of us. If you’ve missed any of them you can catch up with them here.
Health Clinic One – 17thOctober featuring Dr Ranjit Gill, Walk yourself to better health
A recent study by the Macmillan Cancer charity says that 1 in 5 deaths in UK are due to a lack of physical activity and that translates to around 440 deaths in Stockport. Dr Gill explains what a difference doing just 150 minutes of exercise could make to your life.

A national blood-in-pee campaign (bladder and kidney cancer) is being launched this week. Blood in your water –even just the once – could be an early indicator of one of these two cancers. If you catch it early you have a good chance of it being treatable. Dr Briggs gives more details to Imagine FM
Health Clinic Three – 31st October featuring Dr Viren Mehta, Give Flu the cold shoulder
For the last two years Stockport has had the best uptake rate in the country for flu vaccination. Our flu clinics are in full swing now and we’re encouraging everyone who’s at risk to get their flu vaccination as soon as possible. This year Stockport, like the rest of the country is immunising all healthy two and three year as well and Dr Mehta explains the rationale behind this.
Health Clinic Four – 7th November featuring Peter Marks, Keep Calm and ask your pharmacist
Ask Your Pharmacist week runs from 4th – 11th and during it we want to highlight that our pharmacists are highly trained health professionals who can do much more than merely dispense prescriptions. They can offer advice and treatments on a whole range of minor ailments without having to make an appointment. Peter Marks, a Heald Green pharmacist, explains how using pharmacists correctly can ease the pressures facing the NHS this winter.
Health Clinic Five – 14th November featuring Dr Sasha Johari, World Diabetes Day
World Diabetes Day was 14thNov and the aim of it is to raise awareness of the condition, and to get people talking about what lifestyle changes you can make to reduce your risk of becoming diabetic. An increasing number of people are unaware that they have Type 2 Diabetes so there needs to be more public education about the symptoms. Health Clinic Six – 18th November featuring Dr Heather Procter, European Antibiotics Awareness Day
Antibiotics are vital drugs that treat a number of very serious bacterial infections like pneumonia and meningitis but they are becoming less effective because they are being over-used. Patients need to be aware that antibiotics don’t work for viruses – things like coughs, colds and the flu – so shouldn’t expect their GP to prescribe antibiotics for all illnesses. Alcohol Awareness Week runs from the 18th to 24th November and it’s to raise awareness of what level of drinking can potentially be harmful to your health. Stockport has a higher than average number of people being admitted to hospital with alcohol related problems with most cases due to drinking too much over many years. But do you know what drinking too much means? Dr Vicci Owen-Smith explains more.
Health Clinic Eight – 28th November featuring Dr Stephen Gaduzo, Know it, check it, treat it
Today saw the launch of NHS Stockport CCG’s campaign to raise awareness of the symptoms of COPD (Cardio Obstructive Pulmonary Disease). COPD is an umbrella term for a number of lung diseases like emphysema and chronic bronchitis. Although it is not curable the symptoms are generally treatable particularly if it is diagnosed in its early stages. Dr Stephen Gaduzo explains how over 3,500 people may be unaware that they have it.
Health Clinic Nine – 5th December featuring Dr Steven Butterworth, Beating the winter blues
The winter blues and the more severe Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) affects at least one in five people during the winter months. But there are ways to alleviate the worst of the symptoms so that it’s possible to get on with your life. Steven Butterworth, the senior clinician for psychological therapies in Stockport, explains more.
Health Clinic Ten – 12th December featuring Dr Jaweeda Idoo, Keep Warm and Keep Well
Last winter, about 31,000 people in England died as a result of cold weather – that’s around 1,500 extra deaths a week compared to the rest of the year. Most of those died were over 75 and many of these deaths could have been avoided. Dr Idoo urges us all to look in on elderly neighbours and friends as the weather turns nasty and has advice on how best to keep well in cold weather.
