Formulary

The NHS Stockport Clinical Commissioning Group is developing a formulary to guide clinicians on the most appropriate medications to use for patients.

The formulary:

• Is applicable to new initiations and treatments or when a patients repeat prescription is reviewed
• Should meet the needs of approximately 80% of patients. Prescribing outside of the formulary is acceptable provided there is clear justification for this.
• Is compliant with NICE Technology Assessments and guidance ( for more information please refer to the GMMMG Formulary from which the local formulary is derived.

The evidence base for the drug has been considered alongside current clinical guidance and practice in developing the GMMMG Formulary and will help to ensure that patients receive seamless care across the primary-secondary care interface and reduce the need for switching programmes.  Adherence to the formulary is strongly recommended by NHS Stockport Clinical Commissioning Group and GMMMG. During transition from PCT to NHS Stockport Clinical Commissioning Group as the new formulary is developed it will be necessary to refer to both the old Stockport Managed Care (SMC) formulary, where the chapter has not yet been reviewed, and the new NHS Stockport Clinical Commissioning Group formulary for those that have.  As each new chapter of the NHS Stockport Clinical Commissioning Group formulary is posted the old one is removed from the SMC formulary to avoid confusion.

The formulary is one of five main work streams of the Medicines Management QIPP plan (optimising use of the drug of choice) with the aim being to maximise safe value based prescribing.
